Research and Academic Writing Project

This project, supported by the English Language Office at the U.S. Embassy Moscow, will provide online courses and actual workshops to Russian teachers interested in developing their research and academic writing skills. The project will run throughout the 2013-2014 Academic Year. The dates are as follows:

Research Methodology Online Course:
November—December 2013

• Expected time commitment of 6 to 8 hours per week

• This course will cover some fundamentals of research. While the course will address a wide variety of research approaches, the emphasis will be on practical, classroom-oriented action research (as opposed to more "clinical" stats-driven, lab-based computational linguistics or pure corpus linguistics research). While some quantitative data may be involved, we expect most practicing teachers to engage in largely qualitative research. Participants will be expected to develop a research question and plan by the end of the course.

One-on-One Session with Instructor:
February—March 2014
• The instructor will travel to Russia to meet with participants face to face to discuss their research
• Participants are expected to have begun their research by this point
• After meetings to discuss research, the instructor will deliver workshops on Academic Writing

Academic Writing Online Course:
April—June 2014

• Expected time commitment of 6 to 8 hours per week
• This course will focus on academic writing for International publication
• Participants will use their research findings to draft an article
• By the end of the course, participants are expected to have a rough draft of an article describing their research project

• Stable internet connection
• Interest in research and academic writing
• Ability to commit to the project for the entire Academic Year

Please complete the application form and send it to MoscowELO@state.gov by October 25, 2013.
