One of the fundamental challenges of the Russian reform in education that started a few years ago is to combat corruption and provide all school leavers with equal opportunities to receive a quality education. The Unified State Exam (EGE), a high-stakes exam that is a requirement for all students who leave secondary school, was officially launched 3 years ago after several years of trial administration. The results of the exam are now the only basis by which universities may enroll students. But teachers have scarce knowledge of standardized testing, as there are still few experts in this sphere in Russia. The pre- and in-service curricula are outdated and do not provide teachers with reliable guidance.
A team of EGE item writers, most of them International Visitor Leadership Program alumni, have been working for one year under the leadership of Professor Maria Verbitskaya to create high quality materials to help teachers understand modern approaches to testing and assessment. The time has come to share their acquired knowledge with school teachers. These carefully collected materials will fill the gap in teachers' knowledge in this important area and will help them realize that "teaching to the test" will not lead their students to success.
One of the objectives of this project is to provide EFL teachers with first-hand, reliable information about testing and assessment as science. This information is covered by the core course written by a leading expert in testing, Christine Coombe, TESOL President. Christine Coombe has shared her core course with the project leaders free of charge.
EFL teachers and administrators who use this DVD-ROM will become acquainted with Russian and American best practices in testing and will be provided with guidelines on how to help students prepare for high-stakes exams.
Through this DVD-ROM, all those interested – students and parents alike – will receive first-hand information about the items for which writers and developers of the EGE English language test, which will help to reduce anxiety in society by busting myths and stereotypes.
