TUELTA conference: “Teaching Language and Culture: Images of the American World in Discourse and Text.”

The International conference was organized in Tula in the framework of the project “Bringing English Teachers Together to Promote Tolerance in the Language Classroom.” Promoting tolerance is closely connected with getting to know others’ cultural values, that is why several forms such as U.S. studies Olympiad, round-table discussions, plenary sessions were conducted during the conference. Its full title was “Teaching Language and Culture: Images of the American World in Discourse and Text.” The conference started with plenary sessions about American culture by Toni Hull Senior English Language Fellow, ELO, US Embassy, Moscow, and about the problems of incorporating literature into language teaching by Vladimir Andreev, vice-president of Tula Regional English language Teachers Association. Toni Hull made a report about different generations of US youth (X,Y,Z), which gave rise to many discussions. She also conducted a workshop on communication breakdown and brilliantly illustrated the importance of viewing a situation from different sides. The agenda also included round-table discussion about youth problems as reflected in modern American literature with participants of the annual international essay competition. High school students spoke about their choice of literary works for the contest and shared their views on the importance of representing youth problems in literature. The conference was organized by Tula Regional English Language Teachers’ Association, Tula State Lev Tolstoy Pedagogical University and English Language Office (U.S. Embassy in Moscow) with the financial support of the U.S. Department of State.
