Russian Students participate in the Office of English Language Programs’ College Writing MOOC: Principles of Written English 2.1x

458 students at the Moscow Higher School of Economics enrolled in the Office of English Language Programs’ College Writing MOOC: Principles of Written English 2.1x, a surge in popularity that has resulted in a number of requests to the English Language Office at the US Embassy for guidance in organizing and administering facilitation groups.
College Writing 2.1x, an introduction to academic writing for English Language Learners, is the first of three five-week courses designed to help learners improve their academic writing skills. It focuses on essay development, grammatical correctness, and self-editing. The five-week course comprises a review of basic grammar terminology and understanding; writing effective sentences and paragraphs; introductions and conclusions; strategies for writing longer texts; and thesis statements.

Russian Teachers of English Completed Exploring Web 2.0 Online Course

On October 26, eleven English language teachers from Russia successfully completed Exploring Web 2.0 course offered through the Graduate School of Education and Counseling, Lewis and Clark College, and facilitated by Michael Krauss. All participants who successfully completed the course have gained a great deal of experience participating, with other teachers from around the world, in an online learning environment, which was conducted using an email distribution tool and a Web-based social networking platform. They have explored and created several Web 2.0 resources specifically designed to meet the needs of their particular students. Participants know how to collect and annotate bookmarks online, both singly and in groups. Each participant has completed a final project, which involved either a comprehensive self-assessment or the creation of a lesson plan or professional development project. This work product has been shared with all members of the course. Each participant will share with colleagues what she or he has learned in any of a variety of ways: written report, face-to-face or online workshop, panel discussion, etc. This public sharing will greatly enhance the value of the course for the participants and for their professional colleagues.
