US-Russia Peer-to-Peer Program

Directors of American children’s camps came to Russia to attend a seminar, which took place at Orlyonok Children’s Center (Krasnodar Krai, Russia) under the “Campers-to-Campers Dialogue Program.” Orlyonok is considered to be one of the most prestigious camps in Russia. Funded by the US-Russia Peer-to-Peer Dialogue Program, the project will promote a camp counselor exchange between Russia and the US.

The project will send Russian camp counselors to do a three-month internship at summer camps in the US. In return, the Orlyonok camp will host American counselors this coming summer. The U.S. camps participating in the program, which are located in New York, are Chingachgook Camp on Lake George and Surprise Lake Camp.

American camp managers had an opportunity to observe how future Russian counselors are being trained by Orlyonok’s trainers. The seminar provided participating youth with the basic knowledge and skills of how to be a leader and educator in the summer camp. At the end of the seminar, Russian participants had personal meetings with the American directors, who will select the candidates to work in their respective summer camps. The American camp managers also had an opportunity to learn about Russian summer camp management and structure, educational programs and training resources.

The leaders of participating children’s camps hope that this pilot project will pave the way for closer ties and exchanges between US and Russian summer camps.
