Umbrella Newsletter # 59 - 'Citius, Altius, Fortius'

Dear Colleagues,

The third semester is in full swing at schools, students and University teachers are enjoying the last days of vacations before resuming classes next week and as “The Washington Post” highlights - “Russia in the limelight as Olympic games near”.
No doubt, the Olympics will be the most discussed event in the near future and for EFL teachers it will be a great chance to brush up your students’ grammar (with all comparative and superlative degrees of adjectives as well as conditional sentences of all types) and develop communicative and cross-cultural skills.

You can pick up some ideas at the following links:

If your students love instagrams and catchy captions:

Sochi Olympics 2014: We Are All Athletes
This video was produced by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of International Information Programs in January 2014. It showcases U.S. Olympians, Paralympians, and recreational athletes of various backgrounds.

Some reading materials (Russian translations available – good for translation classes), carefully chosen for you by Stefan Mizha:
•Paralympics Highlight More than Athletic Skill
•Soldier Trio Nominated to U.S. Olympic Luge Team
•U.S. Delegations to Ceremonies of 2014 Olympic Winter Games
•Olympic Torch Takes Its First Spacewalk
•What Is Multitasking? Ask U.S. Bobsledder Chuck Berkeley
•Crowdfunding Helps U.S. Skater Finance Olympic Dreams
•U.S. Speedskater Overcomes Injuries to Compete at Sochi Games
•U.S. Figure Skater Edmunds at Home on the Ice
•U.S. Women Bobsledders Look Ahead to Sochi Olympics
